Notes:
Sorry if the photos are sideways. I do not know how to edit yet. Anyway, these trees/bushes are in my backyard between my neighbor and I. They are ugly and tall and I want to replace them with a cleaner looking tree. Any ideas what these are?

You know… I think I’d hit that thing with a chain saw… and cut it to the ground… and let it come back. http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?PID=121

Try to “tree form” the plant. Look in the middle of the clump and select the branches that are providing the thick foliage at the top and cut everything else back to the ground. The third picture at this link is what you are trying to get http://www.walterreeves.com/gardening-q-and-a/amur-honeysuckle-identification/ This news clip will help with annual maintenance http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-05-07/classified/ct-sun-garden-0509-qa-honeysuckle-20100507_1_shrubs-dead-stubs-pruning It would help reduce the spread of this weed by picking the berries off it now before birds scatter them to areas where they are not welcomed.

Is trimming it and making it look presentable considered saving it? I only want to make it look nicer until we can afford some landscaping. 🙂

I am not sure you want to save it. It has gained notoriety as an invasive species. http://www.na.fs.fed.us/fhp/invasive_plants/weeds/amur-honeysuckle.pdf

Does anyone have any suggestions on pruning and caring for this bush? There are many thick branches that stick out horizontally and a lot of smaller branches that appear dead. Also, there are new shoots near the base. How do I make this bush look nicer and how can I control it better?

It’s almost 10 feet tall and the flowers show up in June and they are pink. Not similar to the honeysuckle picture unless honeysuckle can be pink as well. If so how do I care for this plan it has many many branches that all look dead.
