Marquess, thank you SO much for the conformation. I picked several bunches that were jewel red and washed and froze them, in hopes that they were currants and that I could use them for jam. Very excited now! Cheers, Linda

They are definitely currants. I have two varieties, a red one (which looks exactly like yours) and a yellow one. They are tart if eaten fresh but make wonderful jam. Pick when they are fully red.

I wonder if there is any way to be sure. I would love to use them if they are currents, but if they aren’t, I would want to know if they are safe for human consumption. what do you all think? and thanks again for all of your input thus far.

I’d agree with spatialdrift now. I was not as familiar with currants but the leaves and berries sure seem to match.

Currants would be my guess.

Hi, and thanks for your assistance. The berries are about the same size as blueberries and are a vibrant red, unlike the gooseberries in the pictures, which appear to be more of a muted purplish red. Also, these berries don’t have a tail, as the gooseberries appear to in the pictures. The plant is about 4 feet tall, not very wide but the roots are somewhat wider. Please let me know if you’d like more details.

That striping on the berry looks like it might be some variety of gooseberry.
