Notes:
While fishing at Lake Sinclair this Memorial Day weekend, my line hung on a branch (think it was from pine tree) and I discovered this fascinating blob formed around one of the twigs on the branch. It is slightly smaller than a softball and slightly less firm than an apple, it is not gelatinous, but obviously high water content. The one picture is taken with the sun behind the object so you can see the organized detail. I did throw it back in the lake by the way…

I believe this is a bryozoan, an aquatic invertebrate (single-celled organisms that clumps together & cling to objects in lakes). We have them in the lake where I live, and I’ve been told that they are s sign of a clean, healthy body of water.

Softball sized pine galls are not really terribly unusual, though walnut sized are more common. I’d say it’s probably that.
