Notes:
Trying to identify these large shrubs. I’d like to cut them way down. You can see where I did this on one of them last year. It is starting to come back. Based on the kind of plant this is, when is a good time and recommendation to cut it way back?

Looks like cleyera to me. They grow to be pretty tall. You will be busy trying to keep them at the height they are now. I’ve seen folks prune them in the early fall as well as spring and they don’t seem to suffer any dire consequences. I like to prune with by-pass clippers by removing any tall shoots that grow. Cut down to an inside branch for aesthetic reasons Shearing with clippers leaves ugly ends on the branches.
