Notes:
This weed has taken over! It grows to over a foot tall with thorns. The leaves grow three to a branch. It spreads from shoots that grow up out of the roots. Many many roots – that are about 5 or 6 inches below the surface.

You get flowers and fruit on second year canes. When keeping all the berry plants dug, you won’t see the berries…. But you sure do see a lot of re-growth of the plants. Try leaving a plant in an out of the way location, and in the Spring, you will see the blooms, followed by berries around June.

It has never had a berry – and I have been digging it up. It’s tough.

Black berry. Good luck digging this native out. While the blackberry is a valuable native fruiting plant with medicinal properties, those thorns and running root system makes it a thug in a garden setting.
