Notes:

This weed has taken over my fescue yard. What is it? And what is the best method for getting rid of it? Thanks.

I had scads of it in a shady natural area, and it was most prolific, crowing our everything else. That was when I learned that pulling it by hand for several years, eliminated it. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I thought about not doing anything for this year, and yes, the fescue isn’t so happy with these 90 and 100 degree days.

Annual Jew Grass. I know that isn’t PC but that is what I’ve called it for years. Now days it has picked up a number of other monikers, stilt grass, browntop and there are others it answers to. Check out ths link http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-905.html Walter addresses the problem weed here http://www.walterreeves.com/landscaping/microstegium-basketgrass-stiltgrass-eulalia/ Now for the kicker. Personally I wouldn’t fight it too hard in a fescue yard right now. The fescue is under drought stress and it’s going to be hard to keep it looking good and healthy through the summer. Keep it mowed. Core aerate and reseed this fall and apply preEmergents in February and April next year.

It’s either basket grass (Oplismenus) http://floridagrasses.org/Oplismenus.htm or stilt grass (Microstegium) http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/mivi1.htm Good luck getting rid of this invasive… I hand-pull big piles of it, and it seems undaunted by my efforts.
