Oak – Severe Root Damage
Q: I have a big red oak in my yard about twenty feet from our new pool. It was quite fancy and elegant until now. This year, it decided to produce lots of shoots from ten feet off the ground to forty feet.
A: It looks like a clear case of root damage occasioned by the pool construction. There might be some chlorine damage too.
The huge number of shoots (epicormic branches) tells me the tree is desperately trying to recover…but I have my doubts that it will happen.
The best you can do is watch and wait. No fertilizer is needed. Water when things are dry in summer and keep your fingers crossed.
