Arborvitae – Dry Roots
Q: Could you tell me what is going on with our Green Giant arborvitae trees? We watered them until they went dormant in winter.
A: These plants look like the roots have gotten dry. They might have stopped growing in cold weather but the needles still need water in winter.
Try this last ditch remedy: Slowly pour 5 gallons next to the trunk on each one once per week.
Put down a 2″ thick layer of chips or straw under each, extending out 2′ in all directions.
If they continue to turn brown, you’ll know the roots were too far gone to rejuvenate.
