Cicada – Making Holes in Ground when Emerging
Q: These 1/2″ holes are appearing in a semi-bare, shaded area in my yard. There is no visible tunneling. Do you have any idea what is making them?
Msg two days later: I think I found the culprit!
A: Oh man, I am glad you did more investigation. I hadn’t even thought about cicadas causing the holes!
The thing that you found, of course, is the shell of a cicada, an insect which lives underground most of the year and emerges in summer.

I’ll add this to my knowledge base of what could cause unexplained holes in midsummer.
Good detective work!
