Magnolia – Freeze Damage
Q: Several of our Southern magnolias, which have naturalized in our woods, are dead and/or dying. There are 8-10 dead, all ages & sizes. What do you think it is? Date: 3-25-17
A: I showed your pictures to a tree expert who says he’s seeing a lot of this magnolia damage in north Georgia. His theory is that it’s a combination of drought damage, early spring warmup, then this year’s late winter freeze.
On the other hand, I’ve seen lots of magnolias that show no signs of damage whatsoever right now.
Not much can be done at this point. Just another of Nature’s mysteries to contemplate!
