Wolf’s Milk Slime Mold – Identification
Q: I discovered these things in my garden and am wondering if you can tell me what they are? I believe the grayish color ones are older, and the pinkish/salmon colored ones are fresh.
A: It’s wolf milk slime mold. It is an amoebazoa, not a fungus or mold.
This organism is common on hardwood mulch. It appears briefly when environmental conditions are just right but may not be seen again for the rest of the summer.
It’s harmless to you or to your plants.
I have no idea where it got it’s unusual name….I’ll leave it to you to make up a story that seems plausible.
