Erosion and Sediment Control Certification

If you are a professional involved with moving soil with a trencher, a front-end loader, an excavator or a shovel in Georgia, then you need erosion and sediment control certification.

Who needs erosion and sediment control certification?

# Landscape contractors, parks and recreation workers, landscape designers, machine operators, construction contractors, home builders

# Real estate developers, site superintendents, utility contractors, city/county maintenance workers, monitoring consultants

# Other contractors including plumbing and electrical,

# Homeowners involved with “minor land disturbing activities” such as gardening, landscaping maintenance and repair are exempt as are mining, agriculture and silviculture operations.

Why do you need certification? It’s the law. Georgia House Bill 285 says that anyone who is involved with land disturbing activities must be certified in erosion and sediment control practices by December 31, 2006.

Penalties for carrying on land disturbing activities without the proper certification or permits can include fines, permit revocation, forfeiture of bonding and stop work orders.

What courses do you need to take for your certification?

# Level 1A Fundamentals is for individuals on-site performing land disturbing activity, compliance inspections or monitoring activities. (one day course)
