How To Amend Your Soil

Good soil is the basis of every landscape success. Most of us are not blessed with good soil - we have lots of clay, which holds WAY too much water.

Here is what I do to build the soil in my beds.

Mix:
1 part clay or existing soil
1 part coarse sand
(such as the gritty paver leveling sand available from home improvement stores)
2 parts soil conditioner

(you can substitute 1 part composted cow manure or mushroom compost for 1 part of the soil conditioner)

Mix it all 10" - 12" deep and you'll have soil any plant would be proud to call home.

Cooler weather means it’s time to plant shrubs and trees. Make sure to dig a hole three times as wide as the root ball.
